Somatics for Summer

Somatic (body) connection is such a powerful tool to listen deep within. Through the body, we can hear the messages of our muscles, the emotions of our fascia, and the memories that course through our connective tissues. When we embrace stillness to listen and allow whatever to surface to surface, we begin to truly heal from the inside out and build a more compassionate relationship with ourself.

The state of the world this summer has felt loud lately, it's almost like the chaos of the noise is designed to draw our attention outward rather than inward. I'll be 100% honest, I'm not fully plugged into the ~news~ of what is going on. I'd rather protect my peace and be of service in the ways I can control: which is to offer a safe space for you to reconnect to yourself, to this peace that exists in all of us and to the truth of the present moment.

3 SOMATIC PRACTICES FOR CONNECTION AND CALM

1. Vagus Nerve Massage

Behind your ears at the base of your skull, close your eyes and massage the vagus nerve using two fingers. This long cranial nerve stretches from behind the ears all the way to the gut! This is nerve is direct access to our parasympathetic nervous system, our pathway to rest and digest. By stimulating the nerve directly with this massage, we are directly signaling to our body we can relax and be calm.

2. Self-Love Hug

Rub your hands together to generate heat and warmth. Close your eyes and take a few slow deep breaths. Then place your hands over your heart. Feel the warmth you created from your hands soften your heart. Then give yourself a hug, wrapping your arms around you. Hold onto yourself with gratitude, love and compassion. Tune into the warmth radiating from your hands encompass your whole body.

3. De-Pressurizing Breath

Inhale through your nose for a count of 4. Exhale out the mouth for a count of 7. For your exhale, purse your lips into an O-shape as if you are softly blowing a feather. This is also known as feather breath. Repeat as many times as you need until you feel your energy settle into stillness.
