What is Somatic Stillness?
Yin Yoga
The connective tissue of our fascia holds more memory than our muscles. Yin is a slower paced, gentler form of yoga that encourages the release of the fascia, unlocking deeper engrained memories stored in our body. This practice is low impact and supports joint health and mobility.
Some elements of this softer yoga practice may lean more towards Restorative Yoga, using the support of props ensuring absolutely no strain on the body. Restorative poses are introduced towards the end of the practice to allow the whole body and mind to completely relax.
Through just a few intentional asanas (postures), we will build a deeper connection to the body through stillness and breath. Engaging with any experienced sensation to direct our thoughts with care and train our body to embrace discomfort in a calm state.
Recommended props: Yoga Mat, Bolster (or pillows), Blanket, 2 Blocks (books or boxes may work)*
*No worries if you don’t have all the props at home, there are plenty of ways to practice yin without them!
Breathwork & Vagus Nerve Practices
Somatic simply means, of the body. Through the intentional control and modulation of the breath, we can shift our body from a heightened state of alertness to a grounded state of ease.
Every breath work practice in this class will be down-regulating, meaning it is designed to encourage rest and digest (not fight or flight like Wim Hof, Holotropic or Conscious Breathwork). All breathwork will be high blood pressure and pregnancy friendly unless otherwise noted.
The Vagus Nerve runs from the base of our skull (by our ears) all the way to our digestive organs — linking this brain to gut connection. When the Vagus Nerve is stimulated, the Parasympathetic Nervous System activates - meaning we are signaling to our body, we can rest and digest. This class incorporates Vagus Nerve practices such as tapping , body-based movement or breath to communicate with your body, bypassing the loud thoughts of the mind. Save these practices in your toolbox when you need a quick and easy way to self-regulate.
Meditation and Sound Bath
For savasana or the final closing moments of class, we will always end with a guided mini meditation and sound bath with crystal sound bowls and koshi chimes to completely soothe your system by the end of the hour, fully integrating your practice.
Crystal sound bowls carry the frequency of 432 Hz, the universal healing frequency that the Earth itself vibrates at. Each bowl is associated with a chakra or energy center, when soaking in the sounds of the singing bowl this chakra is opened, balance, and attuned. Even though this class is virtual, you will be able to still receive the benefits of the frequency through my intention, which I always set for each classes using Reiki energy healing.
What people are saying about their wellness sessions
“I had a deeply restorative virtual session with Ashley. She gives incredible attention to detail in working together to craft your yoga nidra meditation depending on your current needs and desires. I was able to deeply relax and access states of knowing that help to see how to navigate situations in my life. She is highly intuitive and her care is felt through the screen!”
— Samantha B.
“Wow. I had a Private Yoga Nidra session with Ashley and I am so blown away by how incredibly at peace I felt, during our session and immediately after. Ashley spent the beginning portion by asking important questions to understand what I wanted to focus on. From then, we worked together to create affirmations. Ashley's guidance and voice was incredibly soothing and her practice was so grounding. As a sound healing + meditation facilitator myself, I would highly recommend experiencing Yoga Nidra with Ashley. What an amazing experience. Thank you Ashley.”
— Jane S.
“Extraordinary! Ashley is a true gem in the wellness space. Her guided meditations yoga nidra practices and more help through not only the darkest of times but also through the brightest of times! Her voice is angelic, and she gives clear and succinct cues in her diction delivery. Her content is relevant and needed (and much appreciated!) during these wild political times in the world…”
— Elise P.
“Ashley has this way of making people feel right at home with her friendly demeanor and the way she radiates positivity! She has such a soothing voice in her classes and in her online meditations. Her workshops that I've taken have been filled with sooo much research and knowledge but the way she presents it, makes it easy for someone to digest it. And also makes me want to keep coming back to learn more! It's not intimidating where I feel like I'm incapable of learning whatever you teach. Also, with her research and knowledge - in class/online meditation it just sounds very intentional the way you do things! Which is much appreciated! Note to Ashley's future students: get ready for a moment of relaxation, understanding and gratitude.”
— Joanna C.
“Your class was a dream! You have such a beautiful, calming energy. Your authenticity as a teacher really shines through right when meeting you. You are excellent at getting us cued/set up in the poses without being overly wordy. I loved how you allowed for silence and pauses when you did, that skill of reading the room is everything.”
— Katie D.
“Ashley has been my Wednesday yoga instructor for almost four months now & it’s something I look forward to every week. Love her vibrant energy and personality. As a yoga instructor, she does an amazing job with guiding the breath through our practice. I’ve been practicing yoga as a student for almost 12 years & her practice is quite holistic in approach & caters to all yogis. She’s also taught me a new form of diaphragm breathing. To boot, Ashley is wonderful with meditative sequences and the use of the sound bowls. Thankful for her guidance!”
— Zahra N.
“This was the first time in yoga nidra where I didn’t fall asleep or my mind didn’t run to a million places.”
— Cailin C.
“Ashley is amazing, she is so welcoming! I love the flow of her classes! Her energy is so inviting and calming. And the sound bowls are a plus!”
— Alondra A.
“Three things distinguish Ashley’s class from other teachers; incorporated breath work, spoken word teachings, and the sound bowls at the end of every class! I love more meditative flows and classes. Ashley’s transitions between yin and vin yin moves are smooth and creative. ”
— Shae F.
“The flow and pace of the classes were great!”
